You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13
True leadership? Ask your “leaders,” have they ever washed the feet of another person? Few church leaders would be willing to follow Christ’s example of leadership.
We believe every leader in the CSCC is what we call a Broom Servant Leader. What is a Broom Servant Leader? We believe that leadership in the CSCC is recognized not because of a position or a title. Instead, as James 3:13 says, a leader is most recognizable by their deeds – acts of service – done in humility that comes from wisdom. As the Holy Spirit leads the CSCC, we strive to follow Him as we live out Galatians 5:13. Our primary responsibility is to build up the church in love, inspiring every disciple to discover their gifts and ministry (Ephesians 2:10; 4:16).
We who have the gift of leadership (Romans 12:8) must lead diligently and remain in step with the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:13-16). Our focused passion is to serve the Family Group Leaders who, along with others, keep the CSCC in step with the Spirit’s leadership.
We strive to follow the example of Christ, our LORD and King, heeding His command found in Matthew 20:20-28:
(1) Regarding leadership in His Kingdom, we who have the gift of leadership must not exercise our authority over anyone. The truth is that we have no power.
(2) We are to be servants to everyone. This heart and lifestyle is essential for a Broom Servant Leader.
Note: We are praying for wisdom and the ability to recognize the Holy Spirit’s work in future deacons, elders, evangelists, and teachers – men who will serve together in love, equipping the CSCC to do the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4:16). We believe teachers, elders, and evangelists who walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:13,16, 22-6:1-2) serve together as one to equip the church to do the work of the ministry and bring balance to the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20).
We hope that when you find those of us who serve and lead, you will by recognizing the Spirit of God at work through our leadership, starting with the broom in our hands.
The broom serves as a reminder that leadership in the church is to be radically different from that of the world and much heavier than most know. Many pick up the broom – self-glorification – only to drop it for authoritative-based, role-focused leadership. Not here! We live for the Lord and His people, not the role.
Compelled by Christ’s love, the Colorado Springs Christian Church strives to live by the Spirit, keep in step with the Spirit, and bear the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, and peace—to the glory of God!
